If you want to find out about the origins of Barcelona the best place to start is Museu d’Història de Barcelona. When you arrive at this maze of medieval buildings, head underground to view the 4,000 square metres of Roman ruins, which are brilliantly brought back to life. While it is best known for these ruins, there’s a lot to more to this museum, not least the banqueting hall in which Columbus reported to the Queen of Spain on his return from the new world. For an equally enjoyable heritage experience visit the Museu Marítim de Barcelona. As Europe’s largest Mediterranean port the city has a seafaring legacy rivalled only by Venice. Here you’ll see stunning evidence of this history including the main attraction – a replica of a 16th-century Spanish flagship. The Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya offers fine collections of artefacts taking in Prehistoric, Phoenician, Greek, Iberian, Roman and Visigoth cultures. Expect ancient objects of exceptional beauty, like the stunning metalwork in the Iberian section.

This ticket doesn’t just offer you opportunities to expand your understanding of the history of Barcelona, but also includes two world-leading collections of objects from further afield. The Museu Barbier-Mueller d’Art Precolombí is the only museum in Europe devoted exclusively to pre-Columbian cultures, and its situation in an old Gothic palace adds a perfect, almost eerie, backdrop. After that you can visit Museu Egipci de Barcelona: one of the most important private collections of Egyptian art and culture in Europe.
